2. MB & F Melchior Roboter Uhr Hands-On

Seiko "Shinji Hattori Sondermodell" Limited Edition Uhr für Japan

Seiko neckt die Welt erneut mit einer anderen japanischen High-End-Uhr, die sie über den Sommer (Juni) in Japan als eine sehr kleine limitierte Auflage herausbrachten. Dies ist ein ziemlich schönes Modell und ist ein seltener Blick in Seiko Unternehmenskultur sowie Humor. Es ist auch sehr "japanisch" mit Elementen, die doppelte Bedeutungen haben und mit dem Strandthema, das dazu bestimmt ist, die Ufer Shonans zu ehren, die sich im zentralen Japan an der Küste befindet. Das "SH Special Model" (Ref. SCQE001) genannt, feiert diese Uhr wirklich einige Dinge über die Marke auf einmal. Wir denken, dass Sie es mögen werden.
"SH" steht für Shinji Hattori, der derzeitige Präsident von Seiko in Japan. Er ist seit 2010 dort und ich habe darüber geschrieben. Unter anderem (wie Uhren) Shinji liebt Shonan und seine Strandküsten südlich von Tokio. Vielleicht ein beliebter Freizeitort von seinem, ist das Gebiet auch bekannt, gute Wellen zum Surfen haben. Es gibt viele Hinweise auf den Strand und das Meer in der Uhr, getan in einer Weise haben wir noch nicht von der Marke gesehen. Was noch interessanter ist, ist, dass, während Seiko es leicht als Grand Seiko oder sogar als Credor-Modell (eine High-End-Submarke nur in Japan) gebrandmarkt haben könnte, die Uhr nur als Seiko bezeichnet wird. Die Uhr hat eine Reihe von High-End-dekorativen Funktionen, die sehr selten in Seiko Uhren zu finden sind.


Auf seiner grundlegendsten Ebene ist das SH Special Model Teil des Seiko 100. Jahrestag der Herstellung von Uhren Sammlung. Im Laufe des Jahres haben wir eine Menge von interessanten Modellen von Seiko, die sehr viel auf seine Vergangenheit wie die Limited Edition Grand Seiko 44GS Uhren konzentriert gesehen haben. Als Limited Edition Uhren gehen, ist die SH Special Model sehr begrenzt für ein Seiko mit nur 39 Stück produziert worden. Warum 39? Nun nach Seiko, in Japanisch die Aussprache für für die Zahl "39" ist genau das gleiche wie das Wort für "danke." Diese Uhr ist nur, dass ein Dank an Seiko die meisten loyalen Sammler.
Auf der Rückseite der Uhr ist eine Reihe von Cartoon-Stil-Gravuren auf die Bewegung. Diese sind alle handgefertigt vom japanischen Künstler Kiyoshi Terui, und verweisen auf die spielerische Natur des Meeres. Ich war halb erwartet, Spongbob Schwammkopf dort unten zu sehen. Was Sie zusätzlich zu Fisch, Haie und Vögel haben, ist eine ichthyologische Version von Mr. Shinji Hattori selbst als Fisch mit Brille. Dieser ziemlich charmante Teil der Uhr ist zweifellos ein Element der japanischen Humor, und hat eine doppelte Bedeutung zu deuten darauf hin, dass Herr Hattori ist der "große Fisch" des Unternehmens. Über dem Hattori-Fisch ist eine Sprechblase mit "besonderem Danke" (warum auf Englisch bin ich nicht sicher), das geht wieder auf das "39" Wort und Menge in der limitierten Auflage zurück.

Die Bewegung in der Uhr ist die mechanische und manuell Wunde im Haus gemacht Seiko Kaliber 6898 Bewegung. Die einfache Bewegung hat die Zeit mit Neben-Sekunden-Wählscheibe, die bei 21.600 bph arbeitet. Die Bewegung ist extrem dünn, nur 1,98 mm dick. Es ist erwähnenswert, dass die 6898 ist ein etwas moderner Version des Kalibers 6800, dass Seiko Original in den 1960er Jahren für Kleid Uhren gemacht. Jede der Bewegungen wird von Hand für diese Uhr erzeugt. Die SH Special Model Uhr ist 38,5mm breit und das Gehäuse ist aus 18k Weißgold. Im Gehen mit der dünnen Natur der Bewegung, ist das Gehäuse nur 7,6 mm dick.
Über dem Zifferblatt ist ein Saphirglas, und was interessant ist, dass, obwohl die Uhr hat eine Vitrine zurück, Seiko behauptet, dass es antimagnetisch ist. Während die Bewegungsdekoration lustig und unterhaltend in einer wirklich befriedigenden Weise ist, ist das Vorwahlknopf meiner Meinung nach ziemlich erstaunlich. Das tiefblaue Zifferblatt soll Sie an eine Ansicht des Himmels und des Meeres mit der Mitte des Gesichtes erinnern, das der Horizont ist. Das Zifferblatt ist eigentlich aus der Schale eines "White Butterfly". Das muss ein japanischer Begriff sein, aber es ist blau Perlmutt und das Design ist eingraviert.

Gavox Squadron

It is easy to see the appeal of a military watch. They tend to be practical and tough with clean, functional designs. Finding an affordable "military style" watch is easy, but finding one with actual military pedigree is a bit harder. Enter, the Gavox Squadron. In 2013, the Belgian Air Force commissioned 115 of these chronographs for fighter and transport pilots. Gavox produced 500 units for civilian sale: the brushed stainless GA350.0 reviewed here (350€), and the slightly more expensive (380€) PVD GA350.1. 

Gavox was a natural choice for this project. The Belgian brand has produced other pilot's watches and founder, Michael Happé, is the grandson of one of the famed Flying Tigers of World War Two. The Squadron is unmistakably mil-spec in appearance, with a stout stainless steel case, clean white-on-black three-register dial, and matte black timing bezel. It reminds me of several far more expensive German military chronos but does not mimic any of them. It the right specs for military maneuvers too: sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, SuperLuminova, and 100 meters water resistance. 

This is a mid-sized watch case by contemporary standards and I found the proportions to be perfect. The 41mm diameter body makes it very wearable, and although the dial is densely packed with information, it did not feel in any way undersized or crowded. Its relatively long lugs are thick, drilled through with exposed screw heads, and only slightly tapered. They create an overall length of just about 51mm (still comfortably within the confines of my wrist) increasing presence without adding unnecessary bulk. They also allow the watch to swallow a wide variety of straps – something I have found lacking on some larger watches. The watch is 12mm thick, which is just low enough to fit under most shirt cuffs, but the vertical sides, brushed finish, thick lugs, and exposed fasteners give it a sturdy, industrial look. 

The unidirectional timing bezel has ample grip and smooth, easy action as it rotates through 120 clearly defined detents. The markers align precisely without any slop or play. Its matte insert is engraved and painted, but is not luminescent. A single lume pip would have gone a long way to increase its utility. The signed, screw-down crown is coin edged, slightly recessed, and easy to operate. The chrono buttons are unadorned plungers. Flipping the watch over, you are treated to an engraved case back, decorated with the Gavox  "Flying V" logo and a Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion scale. This last detail is uncommon, and while I am far more likely to ask Siri for such a calculation, it looks mighty cool. 

The dial displays the three registers of the Swiss Ronda Startech 5130.D quartz movement: a 30 minute/12 hour counter on the right, active seconds on the left, and a 12 hour alarm dial below. There is a ton of data on display here, yet it is all legible. Primary time is marked by white, lumed syringe hands that are mirrored in all the sub dial hands, except for the small seconds. The 2, 6, 9, and 11 are cut off by the sub dials, which is a well established chronograph design element, but one I have never really understood. If you are obliterating numbers, why print them at all? This is just one of my personal hang ups. Viewed as a whole, the dial looks properly balanced – with one tiny exception. "Ronda Movement" is printed at the very bottom of the dial, and "Movement" outweighs "Ronda." It is hardly a deal breaker, but the text adds nothing, so its asymmetry bugs me. 

The 30 minute dial functions just as any other chronograph save for the small orange hour hand traveling a smaller 12 hour track within (is that a sub-sub dial?). The 60 second dial is the most open of the three, made more so by its slim stick hand. Chronograph operation is straightforward: start/stop with the upper pusher, reset with the lower. The large, arrow shaped sweep hand runs with the chrono. It has add and split functions. The alarm feature is an unusual complication, but easy enough to use. Pull the crown to position one, and advance the alarm using the lower pusher. It sounds with an electronic chirp. I have never used an alarm function on a wristwatch before (again, I leave that duty to my phone) but I can see its utility, and it adds considerably to the Squadron's character. 

Gavox provides a 20mm stainless steel bracelet with the watch. I am a bit of a strap junkie, but I appreciate it when get a bracelet as part of the package as it makes the watch that much more versatile. It has solid links, solid fitted end links, and a brushed finish. a signed, flip lock clasp closes it up and screw bars secure it to the case. Ah, screw bars... How I love your solid attachment; how I hate fiddling with two screwdrivers. Given the nature of the watch, they make sense, and certainly look the business, but be prepared with a steady hand and a sharp eye. 

I like the way the watch looks on the bracelet, but could not resist trying it on a pair of NATOs: a matte brown leather "Bootstrap" from The NATO Strap Company, and a Bond nylon Zulu from Victor & Wells. Both fit the Squadron's martial nature, and would be a great weekend choice. This is certainly a tool watch, but it is nicely sized and sufficiently handsome to wear to the office on the bracelet or a black padded and tapered strap. 

Gavox has hit all the right notes with the Squadron. It is attractive, functional, versatile, and best of all, reasonably priced. The 350€ list price includes 19 percent VAT that U.S. buyers do not pay. This means we Yanks can get ours for the decidedly Bum-friendly price of $339 at current exchange rates. I think this is a heck of a deal for a legitimate military chronograph that you can easily wear every day. 

Pro: Perfect proportions, cool alarm function,

Con: Anal retentives might obsess over text.

Sum: A real jet fighter's watch for an excellent price. The Time Bum approves.

Ventus Caspian

Back in March, I posted a preview of Ventus Watches, a micro brand created by Elshan Tang of Zelos watches, and his friend Shane, a fellow collector and enthusiast. They had just launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Caspian, a line of four aviation-inspired watches that included three-hand automatics and MechaQuartz chronographs, and I was rather keen on them. Apparently, 636 backers agreed with me, sweeping the watch into production. The Caspian line is now available directly from Ventus for just $249. They provided a model C-01 for this review.

Elshan has a real knack for effective packaging. The Ventus arrives in a simple, unfinished wooden box carved with the company logo. The watch is nestled inside a hollowed wooden insert. Underneath, you will find an oiled leather, two pocket watch folder containing a leather Zulu. Like the watch itself, it is deceptively simple and exceedingly clever.

Like the rest of the Caspian series, the C-01 has a diver's style case, domed sapphire crystal, an engraved crown, and 100 meters water resistance. It is distinguished by its brushed brass construction and sandwich style, Type-A flieger dial featuring dagger shaped hands and an "umlaut" navigator's triangle at 12. The dial is perhaps my favorite element on the watch. Its traditional military layout is further enhanced by stencil-cut numbers and unencumbered by text or logo. It is offered in either BWG9 or orange SuperLuminova. I thought the orange would complement the brass and provide a nod to the watch's vintage inspiration, and I was right. The "orange" is closer to the tan color of aged radium, pleasantly warming its appearance without trying too hard. It also does not try too hard to glow - the luminance is just about non-existant, but the daytime appearance makes it worthwhile.

The case is 42mm wide, 50mm long and 13.5mm thick, which is fairly standard for a modern tool watch. Some owners report that it appears much larger on the wrist, but I disagree. The smooth bezel is more substantial than the thin lip found on a typical flieger, thus requiring a smaller dial. To my eye, the result wears true to size, unlike the expansive dials on traditional pilot's watches that tend to make them look one size larger. The flieger dial and brass diver case are an unlikely combination, but all works perfectly, the slab-sided case with its chunky crown and tapered guards enhance the no-nonsense bearing of the pilot's dial. One look, and there is no doubting the Caspian's tool watch credentials. My only gripe is that it is difficult to get a fingernail under the push-pull crown. You need to pinch it to pull it out, and it has only a few deep grooves for texture. I got the hang of it after a few tries, but a little scallop on the underside would have made it much easier.

The C-01 uses a Seiko NH35. This is a hacking and hand winding variant of the venerable 7s26 automatic with 24 jewels and a 21.6k bph oscillation rate. I have sampled this unit in several watches, and I appreciate its rugged construction and quiet rotor. 

Buyers will get their Caspian with two 22mm straps: a buttery soft leather Zulu and a tapered black sailcloth, both of which look great. I wore the sample on the sailcloth for several days, finding it to be quite comfortable and far more versatile than the undeniably casual Zulu. I also liked its signed, brass colored buckle. I was a bit surprised, however when the keeper began to fray. I am not at all hard on my watches, and even less so with review samples, but the friction of a desktop was enough to cause a halo of loose threads. 

I thoroughly enjoyed the Caspian and found myself reaching for it day after day. The case is just large enough for some tool watch swagger, but not too big to wear under a buttoned shirt cuff. The watch may be neutral, but it is in no way boring.  If you want maximum night visibility, you should order the BWG9 option, but I preferred the mellower aesthetic of the orange with brass. If this combination doesn't grab you, the Caspian is also available in gunmetal stainless steel and MechaQuartz chronograph variants. Just about every aspect of the watch hit a sweet spot for me – especially the price. All models in the Caspian line sell for $249 USD, including international shipping. 

Pro: Handsome and capable.

Con: Weak orange lume, frizzy sailcloth.

Sum: A cool brass pilot at an unbeatable price. The Time Bum approves.
